CANADA’S FIRST

Tsunami Evacuation Tower

PROJECT DETAILS

  • Industrial

  • We are proud to have played a key role in the creation of Canada's first Tsunami Evacuation Tower at Daaxiigan Sk'adáa Née Secondary School in Masset, British Columbia, completed in 2022.

This 10-meter steel structure was meticulously fabricated, transported, and installed with precision by our team alongside a group of dedicated engineers.

A significant milestone in safety infrastructure, this tower provides vital protection for the community in the event of a tsunami.

Gudangaay Tlaats’gaa Naay Tsunami Evacuation Tower

Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

Whistler Welding Services Ltd. proudly fabricated the structural steel for the Gudangaay Tlaats’gaa Naay Tsunami Evacuation Tower, a landmark infrastructure project designed to provide critical community protection in the event of a tsunami.

Fabrication was completed at our facility in Pemberton, BC, under strict Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certified standards and independent inspection processes to ensure the highest level of quality, precision, and structural integrity. The tower was engineered with a focus on seismic resilience, utilizing predominantly bolted connections while minimizing on-site welding requirements. End bolted moment connections were detailed in accordance with the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) Manual on Seismic Moment Connections to meet the project’s advanced seismic performance requirements.

Following fabrication, the structural steel was galvanized at Ebco Industries to provide long-term durability and corrosion resistance in the harsh coastal environment of Haida Gwaii. The completed steel package was then transported more than 800 kilometres via truck and ferry, requiring extensive logistical coordination to successfully deliver materials to the remote project site.

Standing approximately 10 metres tall, the completed tsunami evacuation tower now serves as a vital piece of resilient community infrastructure and demonstrates the critical role structural steel plays in protecting vulnerable coastal regions from natural disasters.

This project represents Whistler Welding’s commitment to innovation, technical excellence, and delivering complex structural steel solutions that contribute to safer and stronger communities across British Columbia.
